CustomWeather Reveals Best Leaf Peeping Locales for Fall 2001
Monday, 10 September 2001 17:37

San Francisco — September 11, 2001 — CustomWeather, the leading supplier of syndicated weather data, has revealed the Best Leaf Peeping Locations for Fall 2001. Based on a number of key variables affecting local climate, CustomWeather has determined which cities in the continental United States will offer the best Leaf Peeping conditions for this Fall.

CustomWeather, which supplies comprehensive weather services, including forecasts for over 58,000 cities worldwide, analyzed the critical historical factors of temperature, humidity and rainfall as well as a future analysis for the upcoming months.

Combining analysis of current data with historical weather patterns of the last 50 years, CustomWeather has been able to determine where the Best Leaf Peeping will occur this fall.

Best Leaf Peeping Areas for Fall 2001
  • Southern New England—including areas such as Albany, NY, Springfield, MA, and Hartford, CT
  • Coastal Mid-Atlantic—including areas such as Roanoke, VA
  • Southern Appalachians—including areas such as Atlanta, GA and Greenville, SC.
  • Southern Colorado—including areas such as Pueblo, CO
  • Upper Midwest—including areas surrounding Duluth and Minneapolis, MN, and Marquette, MI.
This may be a banner year for leaf peeping across areas of the Upper Midwest including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Rainfall has been close to normal this summer there and Fall is expected to be cool and crisp with temperatures dropping down to slightly below normal. The leaves do change early in these regions, though, so it is important to get out and enjoy the color before October rolls around.

Drought Conditions Make for a Less Colorful Fall in Many Regions

A persistent drought across much of Northern New England, Western New York, and Northwestern Pennsylvania this summer may have weakened trees and will cause leaves to fall sooner than normal with more browns and fewer brilliant colors such as reds and yellows.

In spite of recent heavy rains across much of the Southern US, leaf peeping may still not be at its best there this year due to the-long term drought that persisted earlier this summer (and the past few years), which took its toll on many trees. Some of the areas that remain hardest hit include the Carolinas, Texas, and the Mid-Mississippi Valley.

A severe drought exists across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Only southern areas of the Rockies are at near-normal levels of precipitation, and a warmer than normal Fall across the southern Rockies may extend the leaf peeping season a bit.
